Machinist II
Run mills, lathes and boring machines on medium-to-large components at TECO Westinghouse — a senior machining seat for someone leaving service with real hands-on skill.
This is a job at TECO Westinghouse. PowerTechs runs the skills assessment and refers the strongest candidates to their hiring team.
About the role
You'll machine medium-to-large components to close tolerances on TECO Westinghouse's floor — running mills and lathes, boring machines, and CNC. This is a senior seat: it takes real mechanical aptitude, CNC programming and editing experience, and the judgment to solve complex machining problems on your own.
Beyond running the machines, you'll develop machining plans, design fixtures, and support continuous improvement. You'll also mentor and train less experienced machinists. It's built for someone leaving service with a strong hands-on trade and a serious commitment to quality and safety.
What you'll do
- Perform machining operations on mills and lathes on medium-to-large components, holding close tolerances.
- Set up and operate horizontal and vertical boring mills, conventional and CNC mills, lathes, Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs), and Horizontal Boring Mills (HBMs).
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, troubleshoot machine code, and work with CNC programs — programming knowledge is a strong plus.
- Develop machining plans and design fixtures; optimize feeds, speeds, tooling, and materials for performance and efficiency.
- Operate equipment safely and perform complex overhead crane lifts.
- Oversee product quality, question non-standard requirements, and recommend process or product improvements.
- Mentor, train, and assist team members in developing their machining skills and techniques.
Check yourself against the requirements
This is a Level II role. It's for people who have already run machine tools to close tolerances — conventional or CNC mills and lathes, boring mills, or a related precision-machining or manufacturing trade in service or civilian work. TECO Westinghouse treats this as mandatory, not a nice-to-have.

- Stand and move around a machining floor for extended periods.
- Good hand dexterity and precision for close-tolerance setup and measurement.
- Handle medium-to-large components and perform overhead crane lifts safely.

The assessment
Operation Compass
PowerTechs isn't a résumé screen. Before anyone at TECO Westinghouse sees your name, you run a short mission set on a forward operating base — a scenario you already know how to read. An air-defense site loses its data link to AWACS. You work the problem with your squad, under a clock, making the same kind of calls you've made for real.
Every decision feeds a skill profile. It's how we show an employer what a hands-on technician can actually do, without asking you to translate your service record into civilian résumé language.
What the assessment maps to on this job
The six skills Operation Compass measures aren't generic soft skills. Here's what each one predicts on TECO Westinghouse's floor.
| Measured in the mission | Used in this role |
|---|---|
| Analytical Reasoning | Working out a machining plan and catching an error in the code before it cuts scrap. |
| Clear Communication | Documenting a job and training a newer machinist so the standard holds across a shift. |
| Team Coordination | Moving large components through setup, machining and inspection without dropping a handoff or a crane lift. |
| Resourceful Problem-Solving | A fixture that doesn't hold, or a non-standard drawing, solved against the spec rather than forced. |
| Adaptive Learning | New machines, new controls, new tooling and materials — continuously. |
| Composure Under Pressure | Close-tolerance work on a schedule, around live machine tools and overhead loads. |
Questions people ask first
Do I need a resume?
No. Your profile plus the assessment is the application. You can add a résumé later, but nothing is blocked without one.
How long does the assessment take, and can I do it on my phone?
About fifteen minutes, and it needs a laptop or desktop — the mission environment doesn't run properly on a phone. You can create your profile from your phone now and run the assessment on a computer.
Is a job guaranteed at the end?
No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. PowerTechs refers strong matches; the interview and the hiring decision are TECO Westinghouse's. What this route does is get you in front of them with your skills already shown, instead of a résumé in a stack.
I ran machines in service but never touched CNC. Should I apply?
Yes. Close-tolerance machining experience is what matters most; CNC programming is a strong plus, not a hard gate. Run the assessment — it surfaces the durable skills the job needs even when your exact toolset doesn't line up one-to-one.
I'm still a few months from separating. Should I apply now?
Yes. Create your profile and run the assessment now — your skill profile doesn't expire, and we'll line the timing up with your separation date.
What does PowerTechs decide, and what does TECO Westinghouse decide?
PowerTechs runs the assessment and decides who gets referred to TECO Westinghouse's hiring team. TECO Westinghouse runs the interview and makes the hiring decision. Your skill profile goes with the referral.
