Aircraft Maintenance Technician
Keep your active-duty pay and benefits while you train on real aircraft at ST Engineering — then get hired into a civilian aircraft-maintenance career.
This is a job at ST Engineering. PowerTechs runs the skills assessment and refers the strongest candidates to their hiring team.
About the role
You'll join ST Engineering's aircraft maintenance and modification team, working on commercial and air-freight aircraft for airlines and cargo operators. They actively want transitioning service members on the team — and because this is a DoD SkillBridge position, you stay on active-duty pay and benefits while you work here during your transition.
The role is based in Pensacola, FL or San Antonio, TX. It's built for people leaving service who already have real technical skills, a strong work ethic, and a serious commitment to safety and teamwork.
What you'll do
- Remove and replace aircraft parts using special tools and ground support equipment, following your supervisor's direction and the maintenance manuals.
- Complete routine and non-routine maintenance and repair work to standard and on time.
- Keep your own tools serviceable and your work area clean.
- Follow safe maintenance practices and meet every regulatory requirement.
- Log your work accurately and communicate clearly with the technical training teams.
- Take on additional tasks as assigned by the Crew Chief.
Check yourself against the requirements
This role is for service members who have already worked on aircraft — flightline, hangar, avionics, powerplant, airframe, or equivalent MOS/AFSC experience. ST Engineering treats this as mandatory, not a nice-to-have.
Tick what applies to you. It takes ten seconds and tells you whether this role is worth your time before you start an application.
Apply »Physical requirements
- Move around all areas of an aircraft.
- Good hand dexterity to remove and replace parts efficiently.
- Handle stress and long working hours.
- Learn and follow safety protocols.
- Stand on hard surfaces for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs regularly.

The assessment
Operation Compass
PowerTechs isn't a résumé screen. Before anyone at ST Engineering sees your name, you run a short mission set on a forward operating base — a scenario you already know how to read. An air-defense site loses its data link to AWACS. You work the problem with your squad, under a clock, making the same kind of calls you've made for real.
Every decision feeds a skill profile. It's how we show an employer what a 68W or a 2A5X1 can actually do, without asking you to translate your own service record into civilian résumé language.
What the assessment maps to on this job
The six skills Operation Compass measures aren't generic soft skills. Here's what each one predicts on ST Engineering's floor.
| Measured in the mission | Used in this role |
|---|---|
| Analytical Reasoning | Troubleshooting to the maintenance manual instead of swapping parts until something works. |
| Clear Communication | Logging work accurately and briefing the technical training teams so the next shift isn't guessing. |
| Team Coordination | Working the line under a Crew Chief with several jobs open on the same airframe. |
| Resourceful Problem-Solving | Non-routine repairs, where the tools and the ground support equipment on hand are what you've got. |
| Adaptive Learning | New airframes, new procedures, new regulatory requirements — continuously. |
| Composure Under Pressure | Long hours and tight turnarounds on safety-critical work. |
Questions people ask first
Do I need a résumé?
No. Your profile plus the assessment is the application. If you already have a résumé you can add it later, but nothing is blocked without one.
How long does the assessment take, and can I do it on my phone?
About fifteen minutes, and it needs a laptop or desktop — the mission environment doesn't run properly on a phone. You can create your profile from your phone right now and come back to the assessment on a computer.
Am I guaranteed a job at the end of SkillBridge?
No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. SkillBridge is authorized on-the-job training during your transition — you work, you're evaluated, and a full-time offer is ST Engineering's decision. What this route does is put you in the building, on the aircraft, with the hiring team watching your actual work instead of reading a résumé.
My SkillBridge window hasn't opened yet. Should I still apply?
Yes. Create your profile and run the assessment now — your skill profile doesn't expire, and we'll match you to the cohort that lines up with your separation date.
I can only get to one of the two sites. Does that hurt me?
No. Tell us which site works — Pensacola, FL or San Antonio, TX — when you create your profile, and we'll only match you against openings you can actually take.
What does PowerTechs decide, and what does ST Engineering decide?
PowerTechs runs the assessment and decides who gets referred to ST Engineering's hiring team. ST Engineering runs the interview and makes the hiring decision. Your skill profile goes with the referral, so the interview starts from what you can do.
